You Said What?
Ted Leonsis likes to give to charity but this time around, he has no choice but to forcefully give up a check. The NBA a.k.a David Stern has fined Ted Leonsis, $100,000 dollars for a comment he made about the CBA (Collective Bargaining Agreement). Nobody from the Media or Season Ticket Holders caught what was said. I assume Mr. Leonsis did not mean what he said. Apparenty, he said that the NBA will model their CBA like the NHL's model. Mr. Leonsis made a speech during an event for season ticket holders at the Patrio Center. In case you missed it, check it out and you be the judge!
Mr. Leonsis Speech Part 1:
Mr. Leonsis Speech Part 2:
As the media, ourselves included, watched practice Wednesday, we noticed the communication that John Wall displays. There is one thing that everybody knows, and that is, John Wall is a beast. There is no doubt about it. He is so quick and fast, that it's unbelievable how smooth he is. He pushed the ball with this new uptempo offense with ease. He makes it look easy and that's what every great player does, they make it look easy. I remember being in New York when the Wizards drafted John Wall and one writer looked at me and said, "He has horrible defense." Well sir, whoever you are, you are dead wrong. John Wall displayed good defense, blocking a layup of Cartier Martin's and even blocked Al Thornton's dunk attempt. Both times were clean blocks. Made Michael Lee of the Washington Post and myself to look at each other like, "did he just do that?"
One player that stood out of Wednesday night practices/scrimmage was Lester Hudson. His shooting ability was on display. As Comcast Sports Net Chris Miller pointed out on his twitter:
@cmillscsn, "I'm not kidding when I say this Lester Hudson has not missed a shot today dude is like 12-12 in the scrimmage."
Lester Hudson has a good chance to make the team but as I asked him before, he sees himself as a point guard and a shooting guard. Flat out, the man can shoot. He told me before, he made 74 points in a Memphis league game (similar to our Washington DC's version of Berry Farms). He was the 2nd leading scorer in the NCAA a couple of years back. I would be surprised if he does not make the team. Hudson may not get playing time but he could work his way in if Flip rotation.
Agent Smiley aka Gilbert Arenas was being Gilbert, aggressive and making his crazy layups. He did something that the Old Gilbert never did. He played DEFENSE! He was actually hustling and was on his man. He was covering Hinerich, Hudson, and Wall most of the practice. I would love to see Gilbert stick someone like a Nick Young because he will be covering bigger shooting guards in the league. Gilbert did limp off as he ran into JaVale McGee apparently. He went into the training room and came back out but did not participate in the final drills after scrimmage. He was not limping when he came back out, and even Coach Flip Saunders said that he is fine. Great news!
Other things I noticed:
* JaVale McGee is getting bigger, not too big, but you can see his biceps and triceps popping.
* French Rookie, Kevin Seraphin, looked alright as he was banging it down low. He plays with an attitude and hustles. If he, along with JaVale McGee, can learn a couple of go-to post moves, then they can be affective.
* Nick Young's long range jump shot has gotten so much better. He is ready to take that open jumper when John Wall is running the point guard.
* Adam Morrison looks like a basketball version of Johnny Depp from Pirates of the Carribean.
* Kirk Hinerich is actually a great defender and ran the offense exactly how Flip Saunders wants it. He took command of the offense and was the 'quarterback' on the court.
* Both Andray Blatche and Josh Howard were out, while Josh Howard was riding the bike and being stretched by trainers. Andray was sitting on the bench watching as his teammates practiced.
* Flip Saunders said something really interesting. I don't even know if I am allowed to even pronounce it, but here I go. His offense is called the, 'hyperbolic, paraboloid, transitional floating zone' (HUH?).
