Wizards 84 New Jersey Nets 90

Here is a quick run down by the FIRST LADY OF WizardsExtreme.com: Tara Yavari

Post Game Quotes courtesy of the Wizards PR Staff:

WIZARDS HEAD COACH FLIP SAUNDERS

On the team’s performance:

“When you get up big, you have to find a way to sustain it. In our league teams are always going to make runs, but it is how your respond to those runs. I thought that we responded poorly. When we got up 20 points, we were playing team basketball. We were doing it the right way, and we got away from that.”

On the team:

We are capable, but we missed too many free throws, turned the ball over too much, and made careless mistakes. I thought we had great energy defensively, but in the second half we did not have that same defensive energy.”

WIZARDS GUARD NICK YOUNG

On the new season:

“I felt good out there, my wind was strong and my teammates were finding me. We need to start the year off winning to get a good momentum and get our confidence going. I think we’re going to bounce back though, we have a big game on Wednesday against Atlanta and we just need to focus on that and put this game behind us.”

On the injury:

“I felt like it was over for me but the fans made me feel really special with the way they were cheering for me and made we want to get back out there as soon as I could. It was hurting but I wanted to push through it and come back for my team.”

WIZARDS GUARD JOHN WALL

On the game:
"We didn't do a good job closing out the game.  We had a 21-point lead, took some bad shots, missed free throws and had too many turnovers.  We didn't execute and that's why we didn't win tonight."

On his turnover at the end of the game with the Wizards down by three points:
"I should have passed it right a way.  I took and extra dribble and Kris (Humphries) made a great play and deflected the pass.  We had some great opportunities tonight but did not do a good job of closing out the game after we had the big lead."

On Deron Williams:
"He is a great player.  He did a great job of splitting through the defense and the Nets seized the momentum and made the plays to win the game."

NETS HEAD COACH AVERY JOHNSON

On the Nets’ slow start:

Our team was out of sync. We turned the ball over, but settled down in the second quarter and were much better in the second half with our overall performance. We have struggled in the past at finishing games, so being able to close this game was a step in the right direction for our team.  It was a good win. We are a young team and we are taking the steps to come together.”

On Kris Humphries:

“Kris did a really great job fighting (Andray) Blatche in the post to disrupt the penetration of John Wall. He came into camp in great shape and took care of himself. Kris is a guy that comes in early in the morning and always stays late. He gave us great energy on both ends of the floor.”

NETS FORWARD KRIS HUMPHRIES

On the team’s comeback:

“It felt great to win after being down 21. We were down by 21 and just stuck with it. Since we have guys that have been around, guys that played in the league and we continued to stay with it. Some of the guys missed a lot of easy shots in the first half and they started to go in a little bit in the second half.”

On moving forward with tough schedule:

“It’s a tough schedule so we have to take care of our bodies and be ready to get back at it tomorrow.”

On the team’s performance:

“Deron (Williams) hit some big shots for us. DJ (Damion James) was huge on the glass for us helping. It was a good win for us, but now we have get ready for the next game.”

NETS GUARD DERON WILLIAMS

On the win:

It was a good win for us, especially considering how we played in the first quarter. We are definitely proud of the way we battled back and hung in there. The last three quarters we were a lot better. It seemed like not much was going right in that first quarter and just couldn’t hit shots or get stops.”

On how the team came back:

“You got to just try and chip away. That’s all you can do and we knew we had a lot of time left. We were just trying to back into the game and by halftime we were only down eight.”

On containing John Wall:

“Well it’s a tough task. He’s a great young point guard. He’s fast with the ball and you just try to stay in front of him and hope he’s not hitting from outside.”
