Mystics Attempt at Upset of Fever Fails at Buzzer

Sigh.

It's been THAT kind of year for the Mystics. Last nights game just proved that this really just isn't our season.

With the game tied at 59 on the final possession, Indiana's Shannon Bobbitt (I hate that last name) sunk a clear path layup at the buzzer to help the Fever defeat the Mystics 61-59.

Another gut-wreneching loss has been just one of several this year for the Mystics as they have continued the trend of late game breakdowns and losses. This loss was their 4th straight, and 9th out of the last 10. They are winless since the All-Star break.

Mystics star Matee Ajavon lead all scorers with 19. Crystal Langhorne added 17. The loss dropped our ladies to 3-14 as we remain in the cellar of the Eastern Conference. As for Indiana, they improved to 13-6 and are exactly where the Mystics ranked LAST season: in first place.

Despite shooting only 34% from the floor, the Mystics kept in the game for the most part. After trailing by 6 at the half, the Mystics tightened up their defense in the third, holding the Fever scoreless for over 3 minutes into the quarter. Langhorne’s jumper late in the quarter tied the game for the Mystics at 44.

The Fever began to pull away in the fourth, taking a 7 point lead, but that’s when Ajavon lead the charge back and eventually sunk the basket that gave the Mystics their first lead of the game 56-55. A few possessions later, Indiana’s Jeannette Pohlen scored a mid-range basket to to tie it with just over a minute.

The final possession came with 18 seconds remaining as Indiana’s Bobbitt held the ball down to the final ticks. A fake pass leading to an uncontested drive to the basket for an easy layup finished off the Mystics at the buzzer, leaving the entire arena in shock.
