New Invites to Wizards Training Camp
First off, who else is excited that the Wizards training camp starts in less than 3 weeks?
It's coming quicker than you think and with the changes involved with Washington’s roster (six of the players under contract were not with the Wizards at the beginning of last season), there is much to be excited and optimistic about.
If you can make it out to George Mason University for the open part of training camp, I highly suggest it. It is a great way to get up and close with the team.
According to Michael Lee, the Wizards have invited Earl Barron, Steven Gray, and Shavlik Randolph to their training camp. Gray and Randolph were part of the Wizards summer league team this year and both showed promise which is the reason they are being invited to camp again.
As Lee pointed out, Washington will have one available spot to fill if they so choose to do so.
All 3 players are more than likely a long shot to make the squad, but to me if anyone has a chance to make it, it would be Steven Gray. Gray is a 6’5 PG/SG and would give the team depth at a position they need. With Shelvin Mack still rostered and the Wizards signing A.J. Price in the offseason, they now have 3 capable point guards but it never hurts to have more depth. Gray performed fairly well in the Summer League games. He seemed to have a good handle on the offense and helped steady the flow of the game in a league where more often than not there is a lot of out of control basketball. So if anyone has a shot out of these three, I think it is Steven Gray – even if it is just out of circumstance.
Shavlik Randolph and Earl Barron will be fighting an uphill battle. The frontcourt in Washington is rather crowded, and there are already questions to how the rotations will work out. The Wizards have big man veterans in Emeka Okafor and Nene, as well as young, talented guys in Chris Singleton, Trevor Booker, and Kevin Seraphin. There is not going to be much room on the roster for additions at the forward/center spot.
Whether the Wizards make any additional moves or invites remains to be seen, as does whether or not they add to their roster.
The good news through is training camp is right around the corner, and it the buzz and excitement of a possible Wizards playoff run should have fans excited to get the season underway.
