The All-Star break is right around the corner, and as usual for Wizards fans, this means nothing. The Wizards haven't had an All-Star since the 2007-08 season when Caron Butler and Antawn Jamison made it. Only the Kings and the Bucks have a longer drought without a representative in the All-Star Game.
Depressing, I know.
From 2004-2007 the Wizards sent a player to the All-Star game four years in a row and three of those years they sent two players. Yeah, those were the good old days but they're long gone, replaced by a general dismissiveness of the Wizards. These days it’s just one slight after another.
Let's take a stroll through recent history...
We all remember the armed robbery committed against Javale McGee in the 2011 Dunk Contest. Blake “All I Can Do is Dunk” Griffin won the contest when he dunked over the fender of a Kia. Meanwhile, JaVale McGee pulled off two of the greatest dunks I’ve ever seen. First, there was the two balls-two hoops dunk, followed by the three balls-one hoop dunk. We all know I’m a little biased so when I say it was rigged, one might be a little skeptical but what about this guy? Or this guy? Or Nate Robinson who called it BEFORE the contest?!
John Wall being picked twelfth overall in the Rising Stars Challenge. This is a year after being the #1 overall pick. These are the players that were taken before him: Blake Griffin (who was really in his third year but who’s counting?), Kyrie Irving, Jeremy Lin, Demarcus Cousins, Ricky Rubio, Paul George, Greg Monroe, Derrick Williams, Markieff Morris, Marshon Brooks, and Kemba Walker O_O. I mean, you have got to be kidding me. I like most of the guys on this list but not over Wall. I get it if this was a three point contest but it wasn't. Maybe I’m putting too much stock into what Shaquille O’neal and Charles Barkley think, but this is how the Wizards continually get treated.
The worst part about being a fan of a bad team aside from continually missing the playoffs is feeling left out of the All-Star festivities. Who should I root for? I hope my guy can win the 3-point contest, the Slam Dunk contest, or even the Skills Challenge. Something, ANYTHING.
The NBA appeases the bottom feeders by filling the weekend events with players from said teams. No one who played for that Wizards team has won a damn thing All-Star related. Tim Legler won the 3-point contest in 1995 when WE were still named the Bullets. That was 18 years ago and since then, nada, zero, zilch. Forget winning the competitions, WE don’t even get picked to participate most years. Not even when they had that lame H-O-R-S-E competition for a couple of years.
I was supposed to 'Pay Homage' to the All-Star game today but as you can see, screw the All-Star game. After tonight my Wiz will be on a 5 game winning streak, so just wake me up when the second half of the season begins.
