Living Wizardly: The Happy Chanuka Edition!

Written by MIKE ANDREWS on .

The generation of social media we are living in today has bridged many connections between fans and the rest of the sports world, granting access to their favorite teams and athletes. The type of access our daddys would have only dreamed of attaining. So this year, WE are proud to offer Wizards fans a segment that will reveal the week’s top three Wizards-related tweets, Facebook statuses, Instagram uploads, perhaps an AIM away message even. Whether it’s posted by a Wizard or about a Wizard, we’ll be sure to find it, and expose it. Mike Andrews (@mikeandrews89) continues our weekly tradition with his own findings and posts..

For my Jewish friends, Chanukah ends on Sunday. So for this edition of Living Wizardly, I’m going to give you one tweet per day of Chanukah for you to enjoy about your Washington Wizards.

Medley of the Forgotten, Part II: Gar Heard

Written by JAMAL SMITH on .

This series follows management’s head coaching missteps that have inevitably cost the Wizards adequate franchise development. Next up...

Gar Heard
Previous tune: Leonard Hamilton

bleacher report

Following the firing of Bernie Bickerstaff and the interim coaching of Jim Brovelli, the Washington Wizards in June 1999 hired Gar Heard.  Heard spent 11 years in the NBA and served as an assistant with a host of teams, including Philadelphia, Indiana, and Detroit.

Heard’s previous NBA head coaching experience came as an interim with the Dallas Mavericks, where his team posted a 9-44 record during the 1993-1994 season.

Heard coached a roster made up of aging, yet still mildly productive core of Rod Strickland, Mitch Richmond, and Juwan Howard.  Strickland and Howard were key pieces of the Bullets team that made it to the first round of the playoffs during the 1996-1997 season, and then to a 42-40 record the following season.  The team also featured promising rookie Richard Hamilton, long-range specialist Tracy Murray, and veteran back-up point guard Chris Whitney. no comments

Road Warriors?

Written by CHARLES LAMAR on .

newsday.com
Going into last night’s game the Wizards were the only team in the NBA without a road win. Obviously not surprising when you consider the fact that they had only won two games all year. The Wizards pulled out an ugly and hard fought win last night against the New Orleans Pelicans To Be. The sparse crowd in Nawlin’s must’ve made the Wizards feel like they were at home, although they’ve only won two games at the Booth. Even with the return of #1 overall pick Anthony ‘The Brow’ Davis, New Orleans couldn’t stop the Steez. Not the classic Gangstarr track, but Jordan ‘Steez’ Crawford, who finished with a season high 26 points.

Those 26 points weren’t just a season high for Jordan, it was a season high for any Wizards player all year..

Now before we get all giddy about the 26 point performance, consider that it came on 9-24 shooting. But of course, when your team is as offensively deficient as the Wizards are, you’re going to take points however you can. Nene struggled from the field but still finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds. A progressing Bradley Beal looked good, dropping 15 points and adding seven rebounds and four assists.

Medley of the Forgotten, Part I: Leonard Hamilton

Written by JAMAL SMITH on .

This series will follow management’s head coaching missteps that have inevitably cost the Wizards adequate franchise development. First up...

Leonard Hamilton

img.allvoices.com

In February 2000, the Washington Wizards named Leonard Hamilton their third head coach in five seasons.  Hamilton came to Washington with a reputation for kick-starting college basketball programs, the most noteworthy of such being at the University of Miami.

Despite having no NBA coaching experience, the Wizards gave Hamilton with a five-year, $10 million deal with the Wizards, with the first four years guaranteed.

While it is difficult to forecast the success of “college coaches” at the next level, then President of Basketball Operations Michael Jordan had to feel modestly comfortable that the Wizards would improve upon a dismal 29-53 record from the preceding year.  Jordan sought to recruit coaching talent from the intercollegiate ranks, soliciting (albeit unsuccessfully) then St. John’s head coach Mike Jarvis, among others, before settling on Hamilton.
