Wizards Player of the Game

This is a tough one because no player played particularly well but I’m giving Co-Players of the Game to Jordan Crawford and Kevin Seraphin who both continued their inspired play of late. Crawford had another 20 point game, his fifth in a row and Seraphin put in 15 points and 11 rebounds.

WE’s to Watch/WE Spotlight

John Wall – Wall had a somewhat pedestrian game finishing with 12 points and 9 assists. He struggled from the field going 5-17 although he did a good job leading the fast break. It seemed as if he missed Nene’s presence in the post or maybe he was just sluggish coming off of two heart breaking losses in three days. Wall never seemed to be in to the game.

Rajan Rondo – Rondo’s stat line resembled Wall’s. He finished with only 4 points but added a game high 11 assists.  I still marvel every time I watch Rondo at how he dominates the game without scoring and this game was no different. Rondo got his teammates involved early and often.

The Good

Even after getting down early in the game The Wiz Kid never gave up and were able to overcome a disastrous first quarter and make the game competitive.  They actually outscored the Celtics for the rest of the game. If only a game was three quarters the Wiz would've be in great shape.

The Bad

The Wizards field goal percentage. The team struggled mightily from the field shooting 34% for the game. Jan Vesely and Roger Mason Jr. were the only Wizards to shoot over 50 percent in the game, going 5-6 and 2-3 respectively.

The Ugly

The first quarter was as ugly as it gets in the NBA. The Wizards made two field goals in the period and were outscored by the Celtics 27-12. They were never able to rebound from the early deficit.

Go Wizards!!!!!!

Moral Victories Mean More

Written by MIKE ANDREWS on .

For the second game in a row, the Wizards gave up a sizeable lead to lose the game in the second half. These losses have hurt the fans more than any other game during this season because this team is finally starting to find its groove in the first half, but just cannot find a way to close out these crucial games.

Since Nene has hit the floor for the Wizards, the team has looked like a completely different team on the court. They're hustling, playing defense, and getting back on transition. To be up by 16 against the fast-paced Atlanta Hawks is impressive for a team that is still only 11-36 on the season, but ultimately meant nothing without a closer to win the game.

As a fan, these losses have been extremely frustrating, but I've got some solace in knowing that it's, dare I say again, a "moral victory".

The Wizards seem to be the NBA champion of moral victories this season, with many games showing improvement and promise, but without the "W" in the game column.

WE FLICKR

But these two games have been different. Yes, they're moral victories, but they're much different than the moral victories that the team got before the trade deadline.

When Javale and company were still with the team, the moral victories led the fans to think the following:

"Okay, well they look better, and once they make the right moves through trades or the draft, the team is going to have pieces like Booker, Singleton, Mack and more to solidify some great starters."

Now that the Wizards have acquired Nene and got rid of two of the three players who seem to have been bringing this team down all season, it's a completely different thought process.

WE FLICKR

"Okay, we've got Nene in there working hard along with Jordan Crawford, and because of that the rest of the guys are showing up. Now they just need that one closer and this team could seriously contend."

That statement is something I believe in. I truly think that the Wizards are one player away from being a very good team in the Eastern Conference, instead of three or four like they were earlier in the season.

That's a moral victory I can hang my hat on.

 Wizards Player of the Game

Another strong effort and a very solid first half, especially from newly acquired center Nene, who finished with a team-high 21 points and 11 rebounds. After just three games, Nene's presence has already made a big impact, as he has now attained double-doubles in two of his three games with the Wizards.

WE’s to Watch/WE Spotlight

We chose Chris Singleton and Joe Johnson as our spotlight players, and Singleton, I believe didn’t contribute too much to last nights game. Singleton had a total of 9 points and 1 assist. On the other hand, Joe Johnson scored nine of his 16 points in the last period, including a go-ahead 3-pointer in the final minute, and the Hawks beat the Wizards 95-92 for their third consecutive victory.

The Good

Nene and Jordan Crawford to a 16-point third-quarter lead, the Wizards neglected the Brazilian big man in the final minutes and watched Crawford keep shooting until he cooled off down the stretch. The Wizards finished the 3rd quarter with a 10 point lead.

The Bad

Crawford had 20 points, but missed all three of his field goal attempts in the fourth quarter, when the Wizards scored just 14 points.

The Ugly

Washington’s next possession ended with Crawford dribbling off plenty of valuable seconds before missing a jumper with 24.9 seconds left. Atlanta guard Kirk Hinrich grabbed the rebound and eventually Johnson went to the line and made both shots for a three-point lead. Johnson’s 3 with just under 47 seconds to go made it 93-92, Atlanta’s first lead since the first quarter. The Hawks beat the Wizards for their third consecutive victory.

Go Wizards!!!!!!

The one that got away…

Written by SAAM BOZORGMEHR on .

Last night's game between the hometown Wiz kids and the visiting Indiana Pacers reminded of one of the worst songs I've ever heard in my entire life. No, not that "Call Me Maybe" song, (although that ranks up at the top), but rather, one of Katy Perry's newest and most popular songs, "The One That Got Away." I'm a DJ whose been a suffering Wizards fan my whole, allow me to make my comparisons in peace!

Back to business. Sure, that title could be the summary for multiple games the Wizards have played in this season, but this one hurts.

With a 20-point half time lead; let me repeat that one more time in case you didn't HEAR what I WROTE (yes, I'm fully aware of how I worded that) THE WASHINGTON WIZARDS HAD A 20 POINT HALF TIME LEAD, and found a way to blow in the 2nd half.

So what happened? How did this team collapse the way that they did? More importantly, why has this happened more than once to this team this season? In most cases we can point to the 2nd half lack of productivity, specifically the 3rd quarter and pin point an exact time when it started to unravel for this team, but the problems for this team started in the 2nd quarter.

From the get go, the Wiz Kids came out on fire. They started the game 7 of 7 from the field and at one point, I was having a side bet with my partner, Abdullah as to who would miss the first shot. Ironically it was Chris Singleton who probably had the best offensive game of his NBA career, and it's totally overshadowed by the embarrassing way that this team "Katy Perry'd" the game. The Wizards were attacking the basket, Nene was drawing double teams and able to kick out to guys in the perimeter and most importantly, the guys were hitting the open jump shots.

Wizards Player of the Game

Given it was Chris Singleton's poor defensive outing in the 3rd quarter that set Danny Granger off and keyed the Pacers comeback, it's tough to crown him player of the game.

But I'm going to go Skip Bayless and do it anyways. As the Wizards were attempting to weather their incredible collapse in the fourth quarter, it was Singleton who was the momentum breaker for the Pacers. Singleton stepped up to make a number of clutch plays down the stretch and helped the Wizards hang on to their lead. Not usually praised for his offensive production, Singleton was hot from the 3-point line, knocking down 3 of his 4 attempts and finishing with 16 points.

WE’s to Watch/WE Spotlight

Nene, or as Saam likes to call him my "mancrush", had a very quiet outing following his spectacular debut as a Wizard a few nights ago. Nene started the game hot, nailing his first two shots and dishing a nice pass out to Crawford for a three. However, he struggled defending Roy Hibbert in the low post and missed a few rebounds, as he has shown a tendency to do. In Nene's defense, at times he seemed limited on offense due to a lack of movement by his teammates.  Often we'd see guys just lounging around the perimeter watching Nene get trapped in the paint, leaving him with very few options other than jacking it up.

It was a homecoming party for the ex-Hoya Roy Hibbert. Hibbert was dominant in the low post against Nene. As I already mentioned, Nene struggled grabbing defensive rebounds, which in turn helped Hibbert with 5 offensive boards.

The Good

The first half. The Wizards owned a 19 point lead at halftime and allowed only 31 points, leaving members of the media wishfully thinking about a potential dramatic playoff run. Okay maybe that was just me.

The Bad

The 3rd quarter. Although the Wizards began struggling offensively in the 2nd quarter, the Pacers struggled more, allowing the Wiz Kids to maintain a 19 point lead going into the half. Unfortunately, the Wizards evenutally had to pay for their struggles in the 3rd quarter, and the hefty fine was charged by Danny Granger.  After scoring only 1 point in the first half, Granger went off for 11 points in the third, helping the Pacers trim their deficit to single digits going into the final quarter.

The Ugly

The outcome. It was ugly. I'm talking a blend of Tyrone Hill and Popeye Jones, with a splash of Calvin Booth ugly. After starting the game 7 for 7 from the field and pouring in 34 points in the first quarter on 63 percent shooting, the Wizards totaled only 49 points for the rest of the game! Coach Wittman had little explanation for what caused the offensive collapse, other than "getting away from execution".

Wizards Player of the Game

The player of the game was clearly Nene. Now that’s what I call a debut. Nene made Ernie Grunfeld look like a genius if only for one night and he certainly looked like the prized free agent from this past offseason. He started the game off hot and never looked back. His energy was contagious and the team seemed to feed off of him.

Nene just dominated all night finishing with 22 points and 10 rebounds and controlled the paint better than 2 JaVale McGee’s.

WE’s to Watch/WE Spotlight

John Wall - While his numbers didn’t blow you away - 12 points, 8 assists, and 5 rebounds - John played an efficient game.  With the Little General Avery Johnson on the Nets bench (until the 3rd quarter), Wall channeled his inner general directing the team and facilitating for his teammates rather than looking to score.

Deron Williams – Williams finished the game with 17 points and 4 assists while playing only 26 minutes.  He and Avery Johnson were both ejected with 5:23 left in third for arguing no calls. Even when he was in the game, he didn’t dominate like he is known to do. You got the feeling that after missing out on Dwight Howard the Nets might have gone into tank mode.

The Good

Let’s start with the emergence of Kevin Seraphin. He has brought instant productivity off of the bench. Last night he put in 12 points, 3 rebounds, 1, block, and 1 assist in only 16 minutes. That’s what I call bench play.

The Bad

I can’t believe I’m saying this but I don’t have anything to bad to say about the Wizards play last night. If I have to find something bad about the win last night it would be that I’ll end up eating more Papa John’s Pizza than necessary today.

The Ugly

Michael Lee from the Washington Post tweeted a picture of the box score during the game and our captain Andray Blatche didn’t receive a DNP – Coach Decision, he received a NWT (Not With Team) – Conditioning.
