Rose, Bulls Dominate Wizards

Written by Asad Naqvi on .

“We fought hard till the end,” said Nick Young after the Wizards loss to the Chicago Bulls.

The Wizards knew they were going against a great team in Chicago and one of the premiere defensive teams in the NBA.

Considering the state of rebuild the Wizards are currently in, there won’t be many wins. But in the case of a loss, they should always go down swinging.

A great example is how they performed against the Bulls last night.  Giving effort in itself is worth the price of admission.  If you don’t give effort, people will boo like Andray Blatche.

If the Wiz Kids can learn anything from this game, it is that tough nose defense can win you many games and also win some respect around the league.  Nick Young explained it best, “It was a tough task for us because they are a great team and have really great defenders. It will always be a challenge with them.”

Game Preview

The Washington Wizards (4-16) host the Chicago Bulls (17-5) in tonight's game in what will sure to be the toughest opponent the team has faced under interim head coach Randy Wittman.

Wittman has the Wizards playing at a faster pace on both ends, and has mixed up lineups and rotations in order to keep players fresh.  The result has been as many wins for him in 3 games than coach Saunders had all season.  Don't discount the fact that the Wizards played the lowly Bobcats twice in this stretch, but the team appears to be playing harder and with more intensity.

Chicago is coming off of a tough loss yesterday afternoon against the Miami Heat.  No thanks to Derrick Rose, who did all he could to will his team to a win with 34 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists, a steal, and a block.  He just did not get enough help from his teammates down the stretch.

John Wall vs. Derrick Rose will clearly be the premier matchup to watch tonight.  2 very good, young point guards will go head to head.  Rose has already made the next step to superstar, and whether or not Wall will get to his level remains to be seen.  Expect some good scoring and passing out of both players tonight, in what should appear on paper to be a high pace game.

Another good matchup will be JaVale McGee vs. Joakim Noah.  Both players are similar in that they have a limited offensive skill set, but score their points on fast breaks, rebound put backs, and dunks.  Both are also aggressive on the defensive end blocking shots.  McGee is coming off another big game where he had 22 points, 10 rebounds, and 5 blocks.  According to Michael Lee of the Washington Post, Marc Gasol and McGee are the only players this season with 20-10-5 games this season.  This should also be a good matchup.

Based on the records, Washington clearly looks to be in for a tough game.  The Wizards will need to start from the beginning crashing the boards, as Chicago is one of the top offensive rebounding teams in the league.  Rebounding will allow the Wizards to get out on the break and push the tempo, which will more than likely be their only chance of keeping this a game.

Go Wizards!!!!!!

Greetings from Section 106!

Written by CHARLES LAMAR on .

This is my second season having season tickets. I happen to think my section is the funniest, loudest and most passionate section in the Verizon Center.

Okay I might be a little biased but hey, it’s my section!

I sit in Section 106, which is directly behind the basket and in the 4th quarter it’s the visiting teams’ basket. In close games the 106 gets to rocking. G-Man comes to the section, his drum in hand and starts leading the “DE-FENSE” chant much to the dismay of the opposing team fans that infiltrate the Phone Booth every game.

washingtonpost

Free throws in the 4th quarter get booed as heartily as Andray Blatche, ESPECIALLY when Chik-Fil-A sandwiches are on the line. Every game in the 4th quarter someone chooses an opposing player and if that player misses two free throws, everyone wins a free Chik-fil-A sandwich; you owe it to yourself to go to a Wizards game just to see the crowd’s reaction at Sandwich Time as we like to call it.

The best part of my section is that it is filled with a bunch of longsuffering, diehard Wizards/Bullets fans that are knowledgeable about basketball. It’s refreshing to hear calls for back screens and swinging the ball around rather than whooping and hollering for alley-oops and behind the back passes. This season I will share with you the best lines heard in Section 106.

“I wish we could play the Bobcats every night.”

“Looks like you have to fire the coach to get some effort around here”

“Who is this team and what have they done with my Wizards”

“The Bobcats look like the Wizards”

“I know Kwame Brown is out for the season, but you think we could trade Andray Blatche for him?”

And the winner of the night, “You think JaVale McGee can loan Andray Blatche some of his hops?”

Wittman Successful in Wizards Coaching Debut

Written by SAAM BOZORGMEHR on .

Before we go ahead and praise the Wizards for being the 2nd worst team in the league, let's get all the pessimism out of the way. There weren't very many bad things to emphasize in last night's game,  but I'm not used to writing about victories so this is a little new for me.

Work with me here Wizards fans. This is unchartered territory.

The only real problem for the Wizards last night was their inability to come out strong in the 3rd quarter and really put the Bobcats away.

As the cliche' goes: "thats the difference between a good team and a great team."

Instead, their sloppy play and inconsistent defense for much of the 3rd frame allowed Charlotte to generate momentum and cut the deficit down to 13. This was something that was a daunting problem under Flip Saunders and has seemed to continue to be a problem without Flip.

Wizards Need Control of the Phone Booth

Written by MIKE ANDREWS on .

Washington D.C. is a transient town, I get it. When you go to a Washington D.C. sporting event, you will see every jersey known to man regardless of the team or sometimes even the sport being played.

I have no issue going to the Capitals game and seeing a decent amount of opposing rival fans just trying to get a rise out of the home team crowd. I have no big issue with going to a Redskins game and getting heckled by other NFC East teams.

At these games, the fans of the good guys always outweigh the fans of the bad guys from my point of view.

But for the Verizon Center during a Washington Wizards game, it’s starting to become shameful to be wearing Wizards gear amongst the plethora of away team jerseys.

Game Preview

Should we keep this short and just say the Wizards will get blown out today?  Not so fast, I believe tonight's game is one that Washington will have a chance to win.

Teams tend to get up for at least one game when major changes are made, and after the news yesterday that head coach Flip Saunders was fired, I expect the Wizards to bring intensity tonight for interim head coach Randy Wittman.

It also sounds like DJ Augustin will be out tonight with a toe injury, so the Wizards will get a slight break there.

Matchup to watch tonight will be the two young point guards: John Wall vs. Kemba Walker, who will likely get the start in place of Augustin.  Look for Wall to be the winner in this duel, as he has been on quite a tear recently.

The Wizards will have to slow down Gerald Henderson as he has been playing well recently and is currently leading the Bobcats in scoring with 15.4 points per game.  Expect to see defensive specialist Chris Singleton on Henderson most of the night.

I have been predicting a breakout game for JaVale McGee ever since his last breakout game, and he has had some favorable matchups that he has not taken advantage of.  Tonight is another opportunity for him as he will face off against the less athletic BJ Mullens.

Coach Wittman said he would like to see the Wizards push the pace more and make smarter decisions. Whether or not that desire will transfer over to the court remains to be seen.
