Leandro Barbosa's Wizards highlight-reel

While the Wizards have been continuing to improve and make strides that give us hope towards a better season next year, one can't help but notice the play of Leandro Barbosa. I seriously can't even begin to describe how valuable he's been to this team. The conference call chats with Cartier Martin and Jan Vesely from the bench (them on the bench, him in his mansion) have done wonders for Chris Singleton's improved play, John Wall's jumper and the emergence of a healthy Trevor Booker. His "personal experience" as it relates to leg injuries has been a great addition to the moral of players like John Wall, Nene and a recently injury plagued Bradley Beal. Thank you Ernie Grunfeld! Barbosa's been so good, that I decided to make a montage of all the great moments he's had for the Wizards this year, let me know which one is your favorite!

Who Needs Geico when you have Martell Webster?

I'm a big movie fan and it's been very publicly documented on my Facebook page. I go to the movies all the time, any day, for no reason. I'm an addict. It's been something I've loved to do since my dad used to take me as a kid. After working clubs full time and your spare time being dedicated to researching music or making mixes, the few times you have to yourself is precious, and for me, the movie theater is my safe haven.

Martell recently went to the movies to check out the new James Franco rendition of "OZ" and, in so many words, told us all to stay away. Thank goodness because I was literally about to go see it the next day. I loved "The Wizard of Oz" as a kid and I was curious to see how this played out. Well, Today is Friday March 22nd, 2013 and because of Martell Webster, I am now $14 richer and can afford to watch "Olympus Has Fallen" later this afternoon.

I'm extremely proud to be a Maryland Terrapin basketball fan and graduate. In that order. In honor of Maryland making the Not Invited Tournament this week, I would like to wish you all a great and happy weekend on behalf of myself and Greivis Vasquez -- easily the most underrated player in the league and the best point guard in the history of the Maryland Terrapins. This picture was taken the weekend after he was drafted. He hosted a celebration party in which I was asked to DJ. It was a UMD reunion of sorts for me, and it was also on a Friday ;)

As Wizards fan my whole life, I find myself, once again, in an all too familiar situation. As the NBA season winds down and March Madness is underway, teams start to pack it in and the fans prepare for the Miami Heat, I mean.."NBA" post season, I sit patiently waiting for baseball to start (Opening Day is April 1st).

In between my awe of Bryce Harper's dominant spring campaign and being giggity over the fact that the Nationals seemed poise to take the next step and win a World Series, it made me realize how similar these two teams were at one point. It seems slightly weird that we're sitting here talking about the Nationals as World Series contenders when in 08,09, and 2010 they won 59, 59 and 68 games respectively. But could we possibly be saying the same thing about this Washington Wizards team in two or three seasons?

For as woeful as the Wizards may be, things are looking up. The Nationals were able to stock pile draft picks, they got a little lucky by snagging Harper and Strasburg in back to back drafts, but look at where they are now. The Nats are the model D.C. Sports franchise at the moment and the Wizards are trying to do everything they can to replicate their production.

This starts by retaining John Wall.

Martell Webster has been arguably the Wizards’ most pleasant surprise this season.  Failing to live up to his lottery pick billing with the Portland Trailblazers, Webster was traded to Minnesota in June 2010, and later waived by the team this past July.

Webster worked out for several teams before signing with the Wizards.  In Washington, he’s regained his form, registering career highs in scoring, three point percentage, and assists.  For Wizards brass, Webster’s acquisition has been an ideal career rehabilitation marriage.

After the “Big Three” era in Washington ended, Ernie Grunfeld was left with a dearth of experience at nearly every position.  To fill out rosters, he placed hope in a few acquisitions and signings with career arcs similar to Webster’s.  Here are a few:

In 2010 we saw John Wall lead Kentucky to blowouts over East Tennessee State, and Wake Forest before killing the Cinderella story of the Cornell Big Red and finally ending their run at the hands of the West Virginia Mountaneers. In 2012 Bradley Beal earned a spot on the regional all-tournament team leading his team to victories over Virginia, Norfolk State and Marquette before losing to the Louisville Cardinals in the regional finals. 

For Wizards fans March Madness brings us hope in the form of talented ball players playing in a single elimination tournament with millions of people watching. Given that Washington wil be back in the lottery we chose 10 players who could be viable options when draft day comes. Each round we will update the player tracker and show you the stats and highlights from that players games.

I caveat this list with a couple of points; Nerlens Noel was left off due to ACL injury, I didn't include any Euros because I believe the Wizards should be banned from selecting overseas players for the next decade, and Alen Len and Willie Cauley-Stein are absent because Maryland and Kentucky did not qualify for the tournament.

Even though I included McLemore, Oladipo and Smart who all play positions that are established on the Wizards, in the event that Washington lands a higher pick and can trade back I figured it'd be fun to include some other notable players.

In case you’ve been living under a rock for the past couple of weeks, the World Champion Miami Heat are on a historic winning streak of 23 games to date with Lebron playing, by far, the best basketball of his career.

But for this week’s edition of “Paying Homage”, we’re going to visit a much younger Lebron James to remind the Washington Wizards fans why they are supposed to hate Lebron James with a passion.

It’s game six of the first round of the 2006 NBA Playoffs. Cleveland leads the series 3-2, so it’s win-or-go-home. The Verizon Center is packed with fans in white and blue. Gilbert Arenas is having the performance of his life, sinking a 31-foot three pointer to send the game into Overtime.

The Wizards end up with the ball holding a slim lead of one point with 15 seconds to play. The Cavaliers have to foul Mr. Dagger, himself, Gilbert Arenas. He gets another opportunity to be the hero.

Riding on the success of a 3-game win streak, you would think the Wizards have enough momentum going into a 4-game road trip. Well, after some delightful news coming from the NBA today, you may want to think again.

As WaPo's Michael Lee reported, John Wall earned a bit of a boost this afternoon when he was named the Eastern Conference Player of the Week, capping what has been a marvelous stretch of basketball for the uber-talented, yet uber-criticized point guard. 

In his last four games, Wall has averaged 24 points and 11 assists, with just over five rebounds to go with 2.5 steals. This was Wall's first award of this type in his short three-year career. It was also the first time in five years that a Wizards player has earned Player of the Week honors, the last one being Antawn Jamison in March of 2008.

The competition that Wall beat out for this week's award was quite prestigious as well, with Lebron James, Dwyane Wade, and Al Horford being the other nominees.

Wall has been one to respond to publicity. Early last month, NBA agent David Falk criticized Wall, claiming that he will never amount to a franchise player. Wall responded with a brilliant outing versus the 76ers in Philadelphia with Falk in attendance, hitting a clutch jump shot in the final seconds to seal a victory for the Wizards.

Wall is currently in the midst of an offensive surge where he has not only been wondrously running the Wizards offense, but he has been money with his jump shot, shooting over 60 percent from the floor, including five 3-pointers in his last five games.

So, here's to John Wall, the future of this franchise and the face of D.C. basketball!
