Wizards Assistant Coach Tom Young To Retire
June 14, 2007
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Washington Wizards announced today that Assistant Coach Tom Young is retiring. Young served on Eddie Jordan’s coaching staff for four seasons, the last three of which culminated in playoff appearances. Prior to his hire as an NBA assistant in Washington, Young enjoyed a distinguished collegiate coaching career, highlighted by a trip to the 1976 Final Four with Rutgers; a team led on the court by Eddie Jordan.

“I really enjoyed my coaching career, especially the last four seasons with the Washington Wizards,” said Young. “I want to thank the Wizards for this tremendous opportunity. It was great that I had the chance to be reunited with Eddie. I am proud of what we accomplished, and that we advanced to the playoffs for the past three seasons.”

“I learned a great deal about the game of basketball from Tom,” said Jordan. “I enjoyed playing under Tom and then having the opportunity to work with him later in my coaching career. Tom was a great resource and a valuable contributor to our coaching staff in Washington. I would like to thank Tom and his wife, Nancy, for their special friendship and support. I wish them both the very best and will miss them.”

Young, 74, also coached at Catholic University, the University of Maryland, American University and Old Dominion. After the 1976 Final Four with Rutgers, Young was named Coach of the Year Award by The Sporting News and UPI. A graduate of the University of Maryland in 1958, Young was a co-captain on the basketball team that won an ACC Championship. Young was inducted into the University of Maryland Athletic Hall of Fame in 2003.

This is a surprise.

Yep, from everything I gather he is a good guy and will be missed.

Now... this looks like the perfect opportunity to bring in the "defensive minded" assistant that we've been hollering for the past couple of years.

Let's see what happens...

Yeah, a defensive coach would help.

It would help considerably. If we made the right hire it could greatly increase this teams chances.

Especially if the players are willing to listen and learn. Outside of Brenda, I think they will. It'd be a beautiful thing to not have to score 110 points to win a game every night.
