Why The Phoenix Suns May Trade Shawn Marion For Antawn Jamison

June 19 07
Peter Vescey, a reporter with the New York Post reports, that the Phoenix Suns and Washington Wizards are talking about swapping Shawn Marion (http://www.hoopsvibe.com/nba/nba-players/shawn-marion-ar21073.html) for Antawn Jamsion (http://www.hoopsvibe.com/nba/nba-players/antawn-jamison-ar21031.html):

Because probably they can acquire someone like Antawn Jamison (one year left at $17.4M) for Randolph ($13.3M/$14.6M/$16M/$17.3M). Should Oden be the pull, surely Portland will go out of its way to unload Joel Przybilla’s four-year, $26M obligation. Word has it the Wizards and Suns are discussing a Jamison-Shawn Marion swap as well. My Quick Take: Most of you know I’m from Vancouver, Canada. This is where Steve Nash (http://www.hoopsvibe.com/nba/nba-players/steve-nash-ar21110.html) grew up. So we get tons of coverage on the Phoenix Suns (http://www.hoopsvibe.com/nba/nba-teams/phoenix-suns-ar55.html). Last year, many Sun games were shown on television.

We also hear things- all kinds of rumors, gossip, and innuendo. Mainstream media has been reporting that the Suns will make changes because of chemistry issues.

Owner Robert Sarver also has concerns with the team being over the salary cap and doesn’t want to pay the luxury tax. Remember, Sarver let Joe Johnson walk two years back because of cap concerns. True, the Suns got Boris Diaw (http://www.hoopsvibe.com/nba/nba-players/boris-diaw-ar20937.html) as compensation, but I also like Johnson’s game.

Two weeks back, Sarver, Coach Mike D’Antoni, and new GM Steve Kerr met at the owner’s ranch to plot out a strategy for the off-season. They wanted to get cheaper and improve chemistry.

Marion is the guy they’ll look to move. He’s scheduled to pull in max money for the next three seasons and has clashed with D’Antoni over his role on the team. Jamison’s max deal expires in two years and he does a better job of deferring to his teammates.

On the surface, by dealing Marion, Phoenix accomplishes both goals of improving chemistry and getting cheaper.

But moving the forward is a risk. His is so important to the Suns run-and-gun game. Nobody gets up the floor as fast as The Matrix, which puts pressure on opposing teams. Keep in mind he’s the team’s best defender.

I think Phoenix have to tread carefully with trading Marion. The wrong deal could destroy 7 seconds to shoot.

Ok for one this is cleary just a rumor he is the only guy that has wrote anything on this as far as I can see. I read this earlier and just kind of blew it off. Also, I am not really sure how getting rid of Marion for Jamison is going to help them get under the luxury tax- It isnt!
Jamison is the man and would be a good fit wherever he goes cuz thats how he rolls. So I guess in the next few days we will find out the real deal with this or whether he is just thinking about something and printing it.

That being said, I do not know how I feel about this trade. I love Jamison but I also know he is probably not going to be here after next year. And I might want to get someone like Shawn Marion for him if we get anything. Marion is a sick defender and would help us alot, because Jamison is the man but it seems like any teams average small forward becomes a beast against Washington and puts up career numbers. ( I dont know how many times this year I talked to my friend on the phone and asked how come these bums keep careering it on our team.) So I am up in the air on this issue. Who knows what will happen.

It'd be an interesting trade, and I don't think that the production would tail off very much if at all, and the big 3 would still be a big 3, if not a bigger 3...but I'd still like to keep Antawn. He's an important part of this team, in my opinion.

you suck

Personally I don't like Shawn Marion that much. I think it's because of his goofy jumper. That being said, this isn't the worst random trade rumor I've heard this summer. Certainly better than the ridiculous 3 way trade between the Lakers-Bulls-Bullets.

They're both about the same offensivly, it wouldn't be a horrible trade, but I like Jamison..I wouldn't be against it if we did it or didn't do it..How many years does Marion have left on his contract?

I think Jamison might be a little better then Marion offensively but Marion is light years ahead of Jamison defensively.

And Marion has 3 years left on his deal.

it is still all hearsay tho because no one else has reported on anything about this,,,agreed tho about the offense/defense difference

I think either way I will be ok with this... wether it were to happen or not.

The thought of Marion owning other eastern teams does make me lick my chops....

yeah, if they have a chance to pull that deal you have to do that he's both a offensive threat as well as a defender in the post also ranks up there in rebounds; yeah they (the wiz)have to do that!!!!!! then trade brenda outta here

Marion definately benefits from having Nash of course, but he's still atleast as good if not better complete player than AJ. But then you have to think about the chemistry and leadership jamison already brings to the team. Its kind of a tossup

I think because of his defense and age it becomes a non-tossup. Flat out, he automatically becomes the best defender on our team, and tha perhaps rubs off on Gil. Also taking Twan out of here might force Gil to become the leader he has tried to avoid being!

I do love Twan though. For the record.

Asked about a report of the Suns trading Marion for Jamison, the Washington Wizards’ high-scoring small forward, Griffin said: “We never had a conversation with them, ever, about anything like that. Completely asinine.”

def doesnt look like this is going to happen

The Wizards would be stupid to get rid of Jamison, he holds that team together.

Only based on your picture would it be safe to assume that your opinion is non-bias?
