I didn't see a thread on this in this "All Ball!" Forum, so I guess this thread can be used to discuss the Free Agency period in general for the rest of the NBA teams, besides the Wizards.

Here's a link to the 2007 Free Agent List:

Rashard Lewis to Orlando?
The NBA's free-agent courting period began just after the stroke of midnight today, and the Magic were expected to contact Lewis -- their prime target this summer.

Also on the Magic's radar: Vince Carter and Gerald Wallace, along with their own free agents -- Darko Milicic and Grant Hill.

Teams can't start signing free agents until July 11.

Flush with ample salary-cap room (as much as $13 million) for the first time since acquiring Hill and Tracy McGrady in the summer of 2000, the Magic are searching for a scorer. A nine-year veteran, Lewis averaged 22.4 points last season with the Sonics.

"Orlando is a good situation. It's a fit that could work," Dutt said. "If the parameters are there, they can make it work.

"It's very intriguing to Rashard."

That's too much for him imo. At least the Heat get a little weaker by losing his shooting.

Derek Fisher was released from his Utah Jazz contract today to take care of his 10-month-old daughter, who has cancer. This is a very nice gesture from the Jazz. Family first.

Agreed. The Wiz will have to step it up. But a good thing about Rashard heading to Orlando, is that it eats up a lot of their salary cap up, so they more than likely will be out of the running next offseason trying to compete to land Gil. So that's one less team to worry about where Gil could possibly go (if he goes that is, hopefully not though).

Here's an article from the Orlando Sentinel written on June 17th, entitled "Magic should wait for Arenas."
This won't be the most popular thing to do -- it will be another big disappointment -- but the best thing the Orlando Magic could do with their money this summer is to sit on it.

Yes, there will be some salary-cap room for a high-dollar free agent, but not without a sign-and-trade deal that likely will cost them just-budding Darko Milicic.

The Magic plan to pursue 27-year-old forward Rashard Lewis of Seattle, but so will 20 other teams looking to improve in a very shallow free-agent class, all willing to take drastic steps to make it happen. Lewis would help the Magic significantly next season.

Yet Gilbert Arenas could help them even more -- if they can be patient.

Arenas, 25, is the do-everything guard from Washington who will be a free agent in 2008, an all-star the past three seasons and already one of the game's finest players.

Lewis is good, but he is not close to Arenas-good.

If the Magic can sign Milicic to a reasonable contract this summer -- and even after an extension for Dwight Howard -- they can juggle the roster to create enough salary room next summer to make Arenas-in-a-Magic-uniform a reality for the 2008-09 season.http://www.orlandosentinel.com/sports/basketball/magic/orl-nbainsider1707jun17,0,6161852.column?coll=orl-magic

I'm glad the Magic weren't patient and went ahead and signed Rashard this offseason, rather than waiting and hoping to land Gil next offseason.

Chauncey Billups and the Pistons have reportedly come close to terms on a 5-year, $60 million deal.
AUBURN HILLS -- The Pistons and Chauncey Billups have agreed in principal to a five-year contract.

The deal, though, which is believed to be worth $60 million, still has some wrinkles to be ironed out.

"I would not characterize it as being wrapped up," said Andy Miller, Billups' agent. "The discussions are ongoing. I wouldn't say they were positive or negative. There are still a lot of hurdles that haven't been addressed to our satisfaction or theirs."

The basic premise of the deal is believed to be solid -- five years and $60 million. What needs to be worked out, apparently, is the language of the fifth year. That fifth year might not be entirely guaranteed, or, the bulk of the $60 million will be paid over the first four years.
http://detnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070703/UPDATE/707030432/1127/SPORTS0102

That's a great deal. Very reasonable for a player like him so far in this FA market.

Edit - Chauncey Billups' agent denies that Billups agreed to five-year, $60 million deal with Pistons.
"This is a vicious rumor," Andy Miller, Billups' agent, told The Detroit Free Press. "It's entirely untrue. We have not reached an agreement. I don't know what stage we're at. We're having ongoing discussions, and I don't believe that we're on the verge of signing an agreement anytime today by any stretch of the imagination."

I agree. It's just a matter of time. Plus seeing that reported 5-year, $60 million deal seemed too good to be true imo from Detroit's point of view. I say this because Billups is a better player than Rashard Lewis, and if Rashard got a 5-year, $75 million dollar deal, I think Billups should get at least that, if not a bit more.

Pretty good sign for the magic. They have a very young, competitve starting 5 now that could help them out in the playoffs. The kapono signing makes no sense for toronto. First of all, they really overpaid for a guy who had 2 good seasons as a spot up shooter. Second, Mopete is the exact same player. I guess the original report was wrong that Rashard Lewis signed a 5 year/$75 million deal with Orlando. Apparently, Seattle and Orlando worked out a sign-and-trade and Lewis will end up averaging $21 million a year. :011: Wow! And some people thought 5 years/$75 million was overpaying...
Orlando has agreed to a sign-and-trade deal with the Seattle SuperSonics that will allow Lewis to make $126.4 million over the next six seasons, according to NBA sources who requested anonymity. The Magic will send back a second-round pick to the Sonics.

And Dwight Howard will sign an extension with the Magic.
Magic franchise center Dwight Howard is expected to sign his five-year contract extension worth at least $85 million on Thursday. The exact worth of the contract won't be official until next July when the NBA sets the salary cap for the 2008-09 season. Howard will have an opt-out clause after the fourth season, meaning he can become a free agent again after the 2012-13 season.

DETROIT -- Chauncey Billups signed a $46 million, four-year contract Wednesday with the Detroit Pistons, returning to the team he helped reach five straight conference finals.

Gerald Wallace and the Bobcats have reportedly come to terms on a contract agreement.
The Charlotte Bobcats and free-agent forward Gerald Wallace have agreed to a contract, the Observer has learned.

A source close to the negotiations said Wallace will sign a six-year deal worth $57 million. The sixth year of the contract will be Wallace's option. He also can earn bonuses worth as much as $2 million each season.

Wallace's contract with the Bobcats, who obtained him in the NBA's expansion draft in 2003, expired at the end of last season, and he briefly became a free agent.
http://www.charlotte.com/bobcats/story/193233.html

C Okafor

D.G.A.C.O.L.B.
07-11-2007, 08:17 PM
The question with the Bobcats is whether they're going to keep their young talent or not. I hear the owner is pretty cheap but we'll see. I think the Wright/Richardson trade had a lot to do with that too. They didn't want all these young guys coming up for contracts at the same time. Richardson has 5 years left on his deal so he's not going to be looking for money in the next couple of years like Felton, May, Okafor, Morrison, and Wright would have been. Plus he'll be older so he shouldn't demand too much money when he does come up.

Free-agent center Darko Milicic agreed in principle to a three-year contract with the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday, the player's agent Marc Cornstein told ESPN.com Insider Chad Ford.

LAS VEGAS - Free agent Morris Peterson of the Toronto Raptors, whom the Hornets' targeted as their top priority to sign in free agency, agreed to a four-year, $23 million contract with the Hornets on Friday.

Peterson will become the team's starting shooting guard and Peja Stojakvoic will be moved to small forward, his natural position. In 2004, the Hornets signed Peterson to an offer sheet but the Raptors matched it.

"Morris feels blessed for this opportunity to play for Coach Byron Scott with a great style of play,'' Peterson's agent, Rob Pelinka said. "To play with one of the top point guards in the NBA in Chris Paul and to play for an organization in a city where so much has happened that's just a part of Morris because he has family there.''

Cavaliers' point guard crusade resumes
Mike Bibby target again with Gooden and Jones as potential trade bait
By Brian Windhorst
Beacon Journal sportswriter

The Cavaliers' pursuit of a point guard has heated up again.

According to multiple league executives, the Cavs and Sacramento Kings have restarted talks to bring Mike Bibby to Cleveland. The two teams nearly completed a deal shortly before February's trading deadline and have been in discussions again over the past several days.

A version of the deal was close to happening Thursday, sources said, in a three-way move with the San Antonio Spurs.

The Cavs were believed to be after the rights to Argentine center Luis Scola as well, which the Spurs own. When the talks broke down, the Spurs dealt Scola and reserve forward Jackie Butler to the Houston Rockets.

In exchange, the Spurs received point guard Vassilis Spanoulis and a future second-round pick.

There are expectations the Kings and Cavs will continue to have discussions directly and with other teams.

The Kings, looking to add more scoring to their front line, have been interested in Drew Gooden. According to a source, Damon Jones also might have been included in the potential deal.

Bibby, who has two years and $28 million left on his contract, averaged 17.1 points and 4.7 assists for the Kings last season. He has an opt-out clause after this season, in which he will make $13.5 million.

Without salary-cap room and with the market being a little bare for point guards, the Cavs have actively been pursuing trades to pick up a playmaker to help their offensive issues.

In other Cavs news, there has been no movement in talks with free-agent forward Anderson Varejao.

Varejao's representatives, who left the Las Vegas Summer League without a deal Thursday, and the Cavs are believed to be millions apart. The Cavs have said re-signing Varejao is an offseason priority.

I hate this proposed deal, Bibby is past his prime, we would lose a rebounder and a solid 4man in Gooden.

Cleveland Cavaliers' trade talks with Sacramento Kings for Mike Bibby off

It has been only three days since teams could sign free agents and/or make trades and while the Cavaliers have not made any moves - they have not sat idle, either.

The on-again, off-again, on-again trade discussions with the Sacramento Kings about point guard Mike Bibby are off again, according to several sources close to the situation. The deal, according to the sources, would have included Drew Gooden, Damon Jones and a third team. But somewhere between that third team, possibly the San Antonio Spurs, the deal fell through.

This is not the first time the Cavs and Kings have talked about a trade involving Bibby. The Cavs were close to getting Bibby just before the trading deadline in February.

SACRAMENTO, CA, Friday, July 13, 2007 --- The Sacramento Kings and forward/center Mikki Moore have agreed to terms on a contract in principle today, it was announced by Kings' President of Basketball Operations Geoff Petrie.

“We’re really excited to come to an agreement with Mikki Moore,” said Petrie. “He brings athleticism, length, skill and experience to our team and we’re looking forward to watching him play for the Kings.”

Moore, a 7-0, 225-pound, nine-year NBA veteran, enjoyed careers highs with the New Jersey Nets last season, averaging of 9.8 points (.609 FG%, .681 FT%) and 5.1 rebounds per game through 79 contests (started 55). He also averaged 14.8 points and 4.7 rebounds in six Eastern Conference semifinal playoff games versus Cleveland last season.

Smush Parker is going to play for the Heat.
Heat agrees to terms with guard Parker
BY BARRY JACKSON

The Heat concluded its nearly month-long search for a veteran point guard Friday when it agreed to terms with guard Smush Parker, two sources said. Parker started most of the past two years for the Lakers before losing his starting job late last season.

Parker, 26, is believed to have agreed to a two-year contract for a portion of the Heat's $5.35 million mid-level exception. The deal is contingent on Parker passing a physical on Monday.

Parker, 6-4, is considered a strong on-the-ball defender and skilled three-point shooter -- he shot 36.5 percent on threes last season (110 for 301) and gives Miami another outside threat to help compensate for the loss of small forward Jason Kapo no, who signed with Toronto. But Parker, who also can play shooting guard, is a below-average free-throw shooter (64.6 percent last season, 71 percent for his career) and always has had a poor assist-to-turnover ratio (2.9 career assist average, compared with 1.84 turnovers). His lo w assist numbers with the Lakers were partly a function of Phil Jackson's offense, according to a personnel director with another team.

Parker, who essentially replaces free agent Gary Payton on the Heat's roster, is expected to back up Jason Williams, who has one year left on his contract at $8.9 million. Williams missed 44 games the past two seasons with knee problems and other ailments.

So that's the PG they get? They could have done better than that imo. This move doesn't really help the Heat all that much, which is good for the Wiz. I think the Heat realize EG's asking price for Navarro is too high, so they might be backing out with this signing taking place.

hahaha I laughed when I started reading this.....sure parker is decent but I sure as hell wouldnt want him running my team or getting any more than spot minutes. The Heat may think they are hurting us by signing him but that is not the case. If worst comes to worse we will send JCN back to Barcelona. We dont have to do anything with him, although I would still like to send him somewhere with Brendan or Etan.

Ask any Lakers fan. Smush is one of the worst starters in the entire league. They despise him more then Kwame, and that's saying something.

Eddie Jones is reportedly headed to play for the Mavs.
The Mavericks strengthened their depth at shooting guard and small forward Friday, agreeing to terms on a two-year deal with veteran swingman Eddie Jones.

Owner Mark Cuban confirmed the pending deal with the unrestricted free agent. Jones, 35, is expected to fly to Dallas on Monday where he'll take a physical and officially sign. He'll receive $1.83 million in the first year from the Mavericks' bi-annual exception.

Solid veteran addition by the Mavs.

The Clippers have signed Brevin Knight.
The Clippers' pursuit of a point guard ended Friday when the team agreed to terms with free agent Brevin Knight on a two-year, $4-million contract, league sources said.

The Clippers turned to the 10-year veteran after finishing second to the Houston Rockets in the quest to sign former All-Star Steve Francis and considering trades to acquire another established point guard to share the position with Sam Cassell.

Nice addition. With their shaky PG situation (with the Livingston injury and Sam Cassell the only other main PG on the squad), this is a smart move by the Clippers. Obviously this signing will be overshadowed by the unfortunate injury to Brand and it's completely understandable.
