Artice on the Wiz Trade Deadline Situation:
Time To Blow It Up: The Washington Wizards are in a tough spot. Their highest paid player – Gilbert Arenas – is untradeable due to his current suspension and lengthy contract. The player that may be the easiest to move – Caron Butler - is their best players on both ends of the floor. The Wizards most coveted player – Antawn Jamison – is the one player they don't want to move, but are settling in to the reality that it's time to go in a new direction.
Sources close to the situation said that the Wizards seem ready to hold a fire sale and clear out the roster. None of the current roster wants to be part of a Wizards' future and none of the Wizards' players beyond Randy Foye has any real value beyond this season, including Nick Young who the club had high hopes for.

The Cleveland Cavaliers are seriously interested in Antawn Jamison, but are not offering anything more than an ending contract. While shedding the contract dollars of Jamison helps on the financial side, it's not going to make Washington a salary cap player without additional moves and it sends out a player management feels can help them in the future as a leader and a mentor without returning any real talent.

The Wizards have had talks with Portland, Dallas, Houston, Phoenix, The Clippers and New Jersey about Caron Butler. None of those teams are offering a "blow your skirt up" level of talent infusion, as one insider characterized it, it was ending contracts and low level talent.

Wizards' center Brendan Haywood is of interest to the Portland Trail Blazers and to the Houston Rockets, mainly because he's a serviceable big man that is on an ending deal. Both teams have a need for a veteran center and with his ending deal there are no long term ties and he's an easily tradeable center this summer if things don't work out. Sources say that both teams are offering next to no value for Haywood and both seem interested in poaching a big, without sending anything back to Washington.

See a trend developing? The Wizards have a number of trade offers and absolutely none of them bring talent back to Washington. In fact none of the offers include draft picks of any substance.

The Wizards understand they have no future as constructed and seem ready to do something about it, however if they unload what talent they do have on the roster, without returning anything meaningful in the deal the belief is the club would be worse off than it is now.

The Wizards could be one of the more active teams at the trade deadline on February 18th, however if the teams at the table don't start offering a brighter future in their offers, the Wizards might sit out the deals, not because they want to, but because they can't afford to just give away what talent they have.

And here is a Rumor from a RealGM message board poster (don't know how much stock to put into it, so take it for what it's worth):
Latest info I got is that Brendan Haywood has been informed that he could be going to Chicago for Tyrus Thomas and James Johnson. This comes from a player my guy represents here in Europe and is close to Brendan.

I don't really like Tyrus, but maybe he needs a change of scenery to excel? But getting a young player like James Johnson would be nice I guess.

Thomas soon to be ex-Bull
Chicago Bulls power forward Tyrus Thomas lost his temper on coach Vinnie Del Negro Friday and now he's been suspended from the team. The Bulls will desperately try to trade the fella before the Feb. 18 deadline, according to the Chicago Tribune. After all, this is the third disciplinary measure the team has had to take against him in his four seasons in Chicago.

If they can't find somebody to take him, the team will likely renounce his rights this summer. One of the reasons the team is able to think about losing Thomas is because rookie Taj Gibson has been delivering in his spot while he was out with an injury.

i think Tyrus is athletic and a good defender and he can get the job done if he was here. He would be our "true" power forward in that sense. We could now start McGee and let him learn as he plays.

Lol, great point by him. I don't think this is what Flip had in mind when he signed with the Wiz.

Some info from David Aldridge:
The Wizards' desire to move Butler has only increased in recent days, since they found out they will indeed get some cap relief from the NBA this season after losing Gilbert Arenas and Javaris Crittenton to suspension for the rest of the season. Washington's cap number will be reduced almost $4 million, according to sources -- pro-rated amounts of the remainder of Arenas's $16.1 million and Crittenton's $1.47 million salaries -- taking its cap number to a little more than $74 million. The cap threshhold is $69.9 million, meaning Washington could avoid paying tax if it can pare another $4 to $5 million in salaries off its books.

That means Butler, though I suspect the Wizards will ask inquiring teams to remove Mike James and/or DeShawn Stevenson from their payroll as well.

Butler winding up somewhere in Texas is most likely, with Washington probably deciding between Dallas' and Houston's competing offers before next week's All-Star Game. The Wizards are determined to get a young player back, though, and the Mavericks' only non-geezer is rookie guard Rod Beaubois -- while Houston has a young guard like Kyle Lowry and an expiring big man contract in forward Luis Scola to pair with McGrady's $22 million expiring deal.

(Don't discount Portland, either. While much has been made of the Blazers' pursuit of Washington center Brendan Haywood, the Blazers have just as much, if not more, interest in Butler, and are willing to put $3 milliion in cash toward a deal -- which certainly interests the Wizards. But Portland's refusal to put any of its young players other than Martell Webster in any potential deal puts it on the outside looking in. As has been reported, the Wizards want either Nicholas Batum -- no chance -- or Rudy Fernandez -- not likely, as he is a favorite of many inside the Blazers' braintrust. The Lakers would also love to repatriate Butler with Kobe Bryant, who would love to have him. But L.A. doesn't have the expiring contract/young player assets necessary to get seriously involved.)

As for Jamison and Haywood, Washington would rather hold onto both, though there's always a deal out there that can change someone's mind. Cleveland, as everyone knows by now, wants Jamison, but the Cavs still don't want to part with second-year forward J.J. Hickson, whom the Wizards looked long and hard at before taking JaVale McGee in the 2008 Draft. The Cavs and Rockets are also in the market for extra picks for 2009, and are willing to pay for them.

I dont care how it gets spun, these trades are nothing more than money moves. 100% of the "talent" coming are crap, always have been and always will be

This is all stop gap measures so Ted can get the house in order this of season

Very true. I don't get why we want to keep Jamison and Haywood, but desperately are trying to move Butler? I'd rather get Jamison and his 3 years remaining out and entertain more enticing offers for Butler. Also Haywood's expiring deal should net some kind of compensation for him and we should be doing that ASAP.
