Default WJFK - Flip Saunders Interview: Recap

    Junks: How was Vegas

Flip: Vegas was good, veteran players all played well, Nick Young was one of better guards, was happy with Blatche, and very much with JaVale the last two games.

Junks: Who do you worry about in Vegas (nightlife)

Flip: Kept them in a suite - not in a casino. Not a lot of pure gamblers on the team

Junks: Nick Young - difference in play

Flip: Has noticed. Spent time working with him in regards to movement w/o ball, picked up a lot of things they tried to do with Rip. Really wants him to play off the ball better.

Junks: What do you take from JaVale's performance:

Flip: Potential is there, but he is young. Keep working to get consistancy, wants a bigger focus on the big man fundamentals and his strength and power. Has a long way to go to help Wizards.

Junks: If you knew Rubio was available do you still make trade:

Flip: Yes. Rubio will be great down the road, but Miller and Foye fit the team for what this team is trying to do right now.

Junks: On still trying to add a big:

Flip: About 30 minutes to divy right now between Blatche/McGee when considering the minutes that Jamison/Haywood are going to play. Feels very comfortable with what we have.

Junks: Found a place to live:

Flip: No. Living @ Four Seasons right now.

    Junks: Last movie he saw:

    Flip: The Hangover

Junks: Last restaurant Flip went to:

Flip: Been to a lot, Cafe Milano was last one

Junks: What's Flip's golf game like

    Flip: Very inconsistant.

    Junks: What's latest with Gil

Flip: Gil is working out twice a day, in Chicago with Tim Grover and he's looking good. Weight lowest it has been in 5 years. Very comitted.

Was happy a lot of guys came to Vegas to watch the kids and to workout themselves.

Junks: Do you envision Foye starting @ 2

Flip: Competition in camp. Stevenson is still in play to start there - working with specialist, all of them will be in a rotation. They all bring somethign different to the table.

Junks: Big moves in the East - which was the best:

Washington picking up Miller and Foye was #1, and then drops the hammer that all the other teams who made "big" moves will have either equal to or less wins than last year.

Thinks Toronto made the best move by picking up Hedo.

Damn JMG...you're the bubba of WE. It's great you posting a good amount of the news coverage on FA and on the Wiz as well. Thanks for the recap.

I love how the Rubio question keeps getting asked over and over again. Like the answer is going to change. I'd take the trade we made over Rubio for sure.

The only thing I didn't like was the lack of news on Gil. Everytime a question is asked about Gil it's always, "Gil is down to his playing weight when he first got here." That's great, except we've KNOWN THIS for like a month or longer now! Give us something else please. We know he's working Out in Chicago! We also know he's been working with the SL squad...how's his playing? How's his knee? Let us know something new. Don't keep giving us the same 2 facts we've heard over and over again for a month. Rant over.

It should be interesting to see who starts at the 2 spot. I feel like everything else shoild be about set. I think Miller will come off the bench at the 3. We're going to need a vet off the bench. I think the starting 2 is open and the backup 1 will be the battles in camp. I'm feeling good about our lineup.

I think u mean "Brendan" there... yeah I heard the interview this morning and I like what I heard. The youths seem to all want to take their games to the next level, and I'd have paid good money to see javale posterize griffin again like he did a few days ago. If flip is saying that young, foye, miller, and Stevenson are all in contention for the starting 2 I am not so sure Deshawn is going to have as much to offer, but he could step it up too. And like flip said in the interview they all have different to offer. If young continues to impress then flip may see him as the next rip hamilton--either starting or the 6 man. But if he's the 6 then i say either foye or miller will be at starting 2

whooops, my bad, good catch, i try not to do that but i was so excited about the interview......but yeah.......deshawn wont have much at all to offer, your right, i think foye will be the 2 guard if anything, he will mix and match with gilbert for the 1 and 2 spot....interchangeable....

and nick young is looking like a rip hamilton more and more when i saw him in that offense....

Thanks for the recap. I missed it yesterday morning but caught the replay of the interview last night. My favorite part was when he was discussing the BIGS minutes. He said Brendan is going to be getting 33-34 minutes a game this year. This is going to be good for Brendan, because for his career he has averaged 23.41 minutes a game. I fully expect to see some larger numbers from Brendan this year all across the board. I would not be suprised to see 12 and 10 with 2 blocks a game. That would be a perfect center compliment to the rest of our players.

This is what I've been saying. All these teams making moves, just to make moves doesn't make them any better. I love how they miss out on a guy and then move on to another guy regardless of wether or not they fit in with what they're trying to do.

This is why I trust Ernie and believe in what he's doing. It might not always work out, but he's not making moves just to make them. He wen't out and got two guys he wanted to get and didn't worry about what everybody else is doing. All these knee jerk reactions teams make based on what other teams do just doesn't work. How many years have the Bulls been making moves, year in and year out, trading players, trading picks, signing FA's and they're still in the same place where they left off.

By the way, good job JMG of keeping the information flowing on this board.

i love how the guy coachin' this team is now saying we need another big man (ppl on WE have been saying it for months) yet cheap Abe and EG r still jerkin' each other off, throwin around the word "championship" when not only did they not sign anyone but they gave up Songaila who logged serious minutes for us last year, started over both lemonhead and Blatche, and shoots better than Lemonhead and Blatche. granted Brenda is back, but there are a lot of questions marks for a dude who has never once averaged over 27 mpg and had to have screws put in his shooting wrist less than a year ago. its infuriating that we have not done something about this. We should have someone at least as good as Songaila on the bench, and preferably an upgrade; an experienced vet with a ring on his finger.

he actually said, "Deshawn Stevenson is not going to just give up a starting spot he has had for three seasons." I'm definitely biased but I would be surprised if Deshawn doesn't start-- (assuming he was telling the truth to Dan STeinberg a few weeks back when he said his health was tip-top and he can hit 3s again) because of his defense and his experience-- this will be his 10th season in the league, which is more than anyone on the team except Twan. (owned DGA)

The final thing that I would have you all to take away from Flip's interview is his comment about rotations. He means defense. We are going to see some exciting offensive plays, but Flip has said ?My huge playbook is 60% defense, 40% offense.? His general match up rules are: Never leave the dribbler, never let the offense penetrate by dribble or pass, encourage ball to corners, switching cutters and contest all perimeter shots. Triangles are the basis of player position in the 1-2-2 zone. The basic rule is the farther your man is away from the ball, the flatter the triangle and position is based on the ball and the position of your man at a given time.

Anyhow thanks for the recap, JMG. Ernie get this man another quality big man with a ring.

^ also, wanted to add that the Junkies SUCK. they are lucky enought to have the coach of the Wizards on and they spend over 5 mins in the middle of the interview bullshyting about his golf game and how is doing with the ladies?!? and then just before time is up, they throw in the questions about starting the 2 spot and the recent trades made my Orlando.

these guys are more immature than some of WE!!!! WE radio should just take over all Wiz interviews from now on
